BASIC INFO
Name: Honda Tadakatsu
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Mikawa
Appearance:
Personality:
Tadakatsu’s character is one forged through events and times of horror and sacrifice, a time that either tempered ones spirit or shattered it entirely. A mild mannered curious and joking boy gave way to a serious man with heavy memories. Where in the past he met strangers with openness he now instead holds a certain reserve. To this day he despises being helpless to aid comrades and is plagued with nightmares. He no longer prays to the gods, he does not believe they listen.
Damn stubborn, hard headed, obstinate and persistent. When passionate about something he can be damn well near relentless. Whether attaining a goal, defending an ideal, or following a purpose he has a quiet and resolute determination that enables him to do what few others can't or won't. He is incredibly stubborn; many a time when reason has demanded him to stop or flee he has instead stood his ground on shaking legs and through sheer perseverance prevailed over overwhelming odds. This trait of being unyielding has often landed him in situations where he should have backed down; instead he has in the past gotten himself into tough situations that could have been avoided. He knows what is right and what is wrong with a clear moral compass and a resolve that will not let him falter in the face of difficult choices. To him things mostly appear black and white, good and evil. Though he can forgive people of quite a lot since he understands that ultimately people are weak and have failings. The law, he understands is a thing created by man; and so he follows his own morality.
Once any kind of trust is established, Tadakatsu is completely loyal; he places absolute faith in others and is extremely protective of both comrades and friends. This is because he adheres to a rather old-fashioned sense of duty, a trait gotten from living in such a small close knit community. Once gaining someone’s trust he would never betray and would do anything in his power to protect those he befriends or feels obligated to. This unwavering loyalty is a weakness as well as being one of the strengths in his personality.
History:
Honda Tadakatsu served Tokugawa Ieyasu all his life, and fought in nearly all of his battles. Tadakatsu first served Ieyasu as a page and later as a first-rate warrior. He led troops in the second rank of Ieyasu's army at Anegawa, where the Oda and Tokugawa fought the Asai and Asakura. In the actions immediately preceding the Battle of Mikatagahara (1572), troops under Honda (along with Okubo Tadayo) made contact with the advancing Takeda army and were able to escape due to Tadakatsu's skillful leadership. In the actual struggle at Mikatagahara, Tadakatsu commanded troops in the left wing of Ieyasu's army and fought with the warriors of Naito Masatoyo.
Three years later (1575) he commanded an arquebus (musket) rank at the Battle of Nagashino [see Takeda Katsuyori]. His finest moment came in the Komaki Campaign (1584). Left with at Komaki while Ieyasu departed to engage Toyotomi troops at Nagakute, Tadakatsu observed a huge host under Hideyoshi himself move out in pursuit. With a handful of men, Tadakatsu rode out and challenged the Toyotomi army from the opposite bank of the Shonai River. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (who outnumbered Honda perhaps 50 or 60 to 1) was said to have been struck by the bravery of this warrior, and ordered that no harm come to him, his men, or Ishikawa Yasumichi, who accompanied him on this bid to buy time for Ieyasu.
In 1586 Honda accompanied Ieyasu on a trip to Kyoto and was given the title Nakatsukasa-taiyu. Honda accompanied Ieyasu in the Siege of Odawara and joined him at Hideyoshi's Korean Invasion headquarters on Kyushu (Nagoya, 1593-94). In [[1590] he received a fief in large Kazusa (Otaki, 100,000 koku). Tadakatsu commanded troops at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) and afterwards was given a rich fief in Izu (Kuwana, 150,000 koku). He passed away in 1610, considered one of Ieyasu's most loyal retainers and perhaps his toughest general. He was easily recognizable on the battlefield by his famous helmet, which was adorned with deer antlers. He was followed in service to the Tokugawa by his sons Tadamasa (1575-1638) and Tadatomo (1582-1615) (both of whom would serve in the Osaka Campaigns (1614,1615). His daughter Ina was adopted by Ieyasu as Komatsu and married Sanada Nobuyuki.
